The "Big Beautiful" Food Pantry
Campaign
As a response to the new administration's "One Big Beautiful Bill Act" (H.R. 1) passed by a Republican-led Congress in July 2025, which now excludes refugees and asylees from receiving SNAP food benefits, we have been called to a new mission to ensure that thousands of people do not go hungry.
As a response to the new LAW, we are gearing up to open our food pantry in Southern California near our office in San Diego, CA.
Today, approximately one in four residents in San Diego County, overall, struggle with food insecurity, and the impact is even more severe among immigrant and refugee families now excluded from federal support.
San Diego is home to one of the largest refugee populations in California, and a significant portion of this community is made up of Black immigrants and refugees of African descent, who already face higher rates of unemployment, housing instability, and food insecurity. Recent community surveys conducted by the PANA, since the pandemic, show that over 80% of refugee households reported major job loss, with nearly 40% of African refugee respondents reporting worsening access to food.
This is why opening a food pantry in downtown San Diego is critical — the area offers central access to major public transportation routes, making it easier for individual and families without cars to reach essential resources. To further reduce barriers, we plan to provide bus vouchers and other transportation support, ensuring that lack of mobility does not prevent individuals and families from accessing nutritious food. In partnership with local grocery stores and local farms throughout the San Diego region, our pantry will distribute fresh, culturally appropriate, and nutritious food, supporting both community health and the local food system.
As we enter the New Year, we have our hopes high and expectations set to make a huge impact in our community. Our pantry, set to open early 2026, is designed to meet people where they are, filling a growing gap left by federal cuts.
Your support will help us ensure that no individual, child, or parent goes hungry because of these cuts. Together we can provide stable access to fresh food, dignity, and hope for those now left with nowhere else to turn.
Continued.
